The North Shore Family Respite Centre Project

Care BC’s North Shore Family Respite Centre (NSFRC), in partnership with Catalyst Community Developments Society, The City of North Vancouver and Vancouver Coastal Health, will occupy the ground floor of a new six-story mix-use building to be situated at St. George’s and East 2nd in the City of North Vancouver.

Combining innovative guest-focused design with proven therapeutic programs, this facility will be the first of its kind on the North Shore to house an integrated Adult Day Program (ADP) and Overnight Respite (ONR). The floor plan will be designed in response to the latest research in respite care to create a state-of-the-art facility that will meet the specialized requirements of our program participants.

The Adult Day Care program houses the main and welcoming entrance to the Centre, featuring amenities such as a large activity area and dining room, arts and crafts rooms and ample open space for mobility to serve up to 25 Adult Day Program guests.

The Overnight Respite area will offer similar amenities and be designed with equal attention to detail. Each of the 18 private bedrooms will have their own bathrooms, nicely appointed décor, and armchairs all to create a home-like feeling.

Culturally and nutritionally appropriate meals will be prepared by the Chef in the Centre’s ultramodern kitchen and include three hot meals per day and healthy snacks.

A private dining and activity room will offer overnight guests and visitors a place to dine and socialize. Three lounge areas will provide a tranquil space for rest and reflection. Assisted bathing facilities will also be built for those who need extra help with activities of daily living.

The guests will be able to move between the two wings to socialize, enjoy lunch together and jointly participate in programs and activities. A healing garden and summer patio, accessible from either wing, will be available for guests and their visitors’ enjoyment.

We are so grateful for the care and kindness that was shown toward Sharon during her recent stay at the Respite Centre. She sees her experience in positive terms and the patience shown her has given our family tremendous encouragement for future care options. She is now expressing interest in activities which have abated over her years of illness. A heartfelt thanks to all of you! M.F.

What is Respite

At the North Shore Family Respite Centre, seniors with cognitive and complex health issues will be cared for by a dedicated team of nursing and support staff; the guests will benefit from therapeutic programs and the opportunity to socialize with other guests while the caregiver receives a break from their 24/7 responsibilities.
